"I used one of Ali's kitchen knives..."
Imagery is shown in the quote because the details of carving "Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul" allows the audience to visualize the the strokes of the knife Amir makes and the efforts he uses even as a child to carve part of the trunk out to reveal letters. This imagery also reveals the cultural value of friendship because even with the harsh existence of ethinic discriminations children like Amir and Hassan are able to overlook it under the pomegranate tree and feel their friendship. With the tedious action of carving words into a tree trunk, one can really understand and see that ehtnicity does not always prevent friendship. Although most of Afghanistan shows that ethnicity does matter in relationships, this particular example shows that not all Afghans live by the rule that ethnic minorites are simply not human. When the cultural value of friendship is put into place, the traditional values and opinions may be pushed aside.
